What it’s like to be a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (NP)?

In this episode, I welcomed Wailua Brandman, MSN, APRN, PMHCNS/NPBC CHMRP.

He started his APRN career as psychiatric CNS, then became a psychiatric mental health NP (PMHNP) and is the pioneer PMHNP in Hawai’i.

His contribution as psych NP was recognized well in the community of Hawai’i and he received Best of Honolulu Award as a Psychotherapists / Psychiatric APRNs every year from 2015 to 2024.

He received Distinguished Alumnus Award - Yale University School of Nursing in 2021 and is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. He received so many other awards and honorary positions for his dedications to nursing in the U.S.

In this episode, Wailua will talk about what psych NPs do, pros and cons of being psych NP and so many more.


He will also talk about some advice on nurses who are considering of becoming psych NPs someday.


Bio of the guest speaker:
Wailua Brandman, MSN, APRN, PMHCNS/NP BC CHMRP
Mr Brandman is an advanced practice registered nurse psychotherapist/prescriber in private practice and the clinical director of Ke’ena Mauliola Nele Paia, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the cofounder of the Hawaii Association of Professional Nurses and an advanced practice registered nurse preceptor for a dozen universities, including Rush University, Johns Hopkins University, Frontier University, Medical University of South Carolina, and Regis College, among others. Mr Brandman completed his undergraduate degree at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, and his master’s degree in nursing at the Yale School of Nursing in New Haven, Connecticut, and is a 2021 recipient of the YSN Distinguished Alumni Award. He earned his postmaster’s certificate in adult psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner from California State University Long Beach in Long Beach, California. Mr Brandman is an expert on bipolar disorder and serves as a consultant for AbbVie, and Otsuka America. He is the author of Misery or Happiness: It’s ALL About Energy and was inducted a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, now the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

I’m a family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Hawaii, USA.
I was born and raised in Japan🇯🇵. I moved to the U.S. to become an NP when I was 25 years old after working as a registered nurse in Japan✈️

English is my second language, and becoming an NP in the U.S. as a foreign-born international student wasn’t easy. But, I was able to achieve my dream as well as many dreams that I couldn’t even imagine before, which include being awarded the State Award for Excellence for the State of Hawaii by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2024🏆

My mission is to empower nurses from all over the world to achieve their dreams of building successful and fulfilling nurse practitioner careers✨

One of my mottoes is “WORK HARD, PLAY HARD” (which, by the way, is my favorite phrase I learned from American culture😄). While I see patients at two clinical practices, run an online coaching business, and do many other things, I surf three to four times a week🏄‍♀️ and go on a vacation every three to four months🏝️
