The Mae Klong Railway Market, locally known as Hoop Rom Market, is an incredibly unique market in Samut Songkhram Province, Thailand. This place has earned the nickname "Siang Tai," meaning "life-risking" market due to its close proximity to an active railway line. This special feature has turned the market into a must-see tourist attraction in Thailand.

Sprawling over a length of approximately 100 meters, this market is situated right beside the railway near the Mae Klong Railway Station in Mueng District. As a typical fresh market, it offers a wide range of goods, from seafood, vegetables, and fruits, to fresh and dried food, meats, and various other items. The market operates daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The "life-risking" aspect of the market stems from the fact that vendors set up their stalls and extend their sun-protecting parasols and canvases right up to the edges of the railway. Visitors walk and shop along this narrow path, nestled between the market stalls and the railway line.

Eight times per day, upon the signal of an incoming train, a flurry of activity ensues. Vendors swiftly retract their parasols and clear their goods from the railway track to make way for the approaching train. The scene is normal for locals but provides a thrill for tourists who find the activity both exciting and memorable. The market is hence aptly named the 'Hoop Rom' or 'umbrella-closing' market.

Train schedules dictate this event, with arrivals at Mae Klong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m., and departures at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

To reach the market by car, you take the Thonburi-Pak Tho route until the 63rd kilometer. Then, keep left and enter the paralleled elevated highway to reach the center of Samut Songkhram. Continue past the first light and the market, and at the second light, turn right and cross over the railway to arrive at the Mae Klong Railway Market.

For those wishing to travel by train, start from Wonwian Yai Railway Station and alight at Mahachai Station. Then, take a ferry to Tha Chalom side and catch another train from Ban Laem Station to Mae Klong, which is the last station.
