STORYLINE:
Candles were lit outside the Iranian embassy in Baghdad on Monday, as Iraqis expressed their sorrow over the death of Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi.

Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash along with the country's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials.

Iran's ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadegh, thanked the Iraqi government and "all sectors of the Iraqi people" for their condolences.

The deaths are likely to reverberate across the Middle East, where Iran’s influence runs wide and deep, due to Iran's decades long support of armed groups and militants in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Palestinian territories.

Raisi was a hard-line protege of the country’s supreme leader who helped oversee the mass executions of thousands in 1988 and later led the country as it enriched uranium near weapons-grade levels, launched a major attack on Israel and experienced mass protests.
