Brazil has 176 GW of installed capacity, and its power matrix is predominantly renewable. The country is highly interconnected, but a significant part of the North region is not connected. The Amazon Region of Brazil has isolated generation systems that add up to approximately 1 GW in diesel-based generation and serve about 3.3 million people. Diesel makes generation in the Isolated Systems highly intense in emissions, and there is also a great environmental risk to the transport of diesel by river for delivery to consumption sites. It is a huge and complex concern. The relevant issue is to identify the opportunities and solutions to transform the Amazon into a diesel-free environment using clean and renewable energy systems associated with electricity consumption models that allow a broad economic and social development of the communities served and that are compatible with the region’s environmental complexity.

Speaker bio:

Pedro Luiz de Oliveira Jatobá is Chief Generation Officer of Eletrobras, acting in the leadership of the management of the main and largest electric power projects in Brazil. He inspires and leads a multidiciplinary team in the area of generation and commercialization of electric power at national and international levels, environment area and regulation of generation, prioritizing sustainability, competitiveness and profitability of operations.

Pedro Jatobá holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Bahia and has a specialization in Telecommunications and Production Engineering. Since the '80s he has been working in companies related to Eletrobras, acting in functions such as: control of protection systems for transmitters; operation and dispatch; design of telecommunications and operating systems; business management and development in distribution companies.

In 2009, he assumed the leadership of the Department of International Business Development of Eletrobras, working on the evaluation of business opportunities in renewable energy generation and transmission systems in South America, Central America, the United States and Africa. From 2014 until September 2019, he was the overseas operations superintendent, responsible for coordinating the international activity of the company, promoting identification and evaluating new opportunities abroad for business and project generation.
