Are my old metal fillings dangerous to my health?

Questions about the danger of old metal fillings is somewhat controversial. These black metal fillings are over 50% mercury, which is a toxic heavy metal. According to state and federal environmental protection agencies, it must be handled as toxic waste. Armed with that information, most patients would choose not to have it in their mouths.
