On April 3, 2021 at 02:00 pm GMT the online meeting of journalists takes place. Public confidence in the media, already low, continues to slip. Researchers, academicians and journalists themselves documented the following problems in journalism in the consumer society: high level of inaccuracies, scant knowledge of an issue, under reporting, sensationalism (disturbing tendency for the press to play up and dwell on stories that are sensational - murders, car crashes, kidnappings, sex scandals and the like). Why do newspapers frequently over-dramatize some news stories just to sell more papers? Journalists agree that most news organizations lack proper Internal Guidelines and Codes of Ethics.
At the same time while the media is busy covering sensationalist stories, issues that affect our lives and the whole world receive little attention, for example, reasons for a sudden climate change on Earth. As we know poor coverage of important issues leads to aggravation of the situation. The news media and public ignore a serious problem for years; for some reason, they suddenly notice, declare it a crisis and concoct a solution.
In the emerging creative society of the 21st century bringing back dignity to a profession of a journalist is of a paramount importance. If media breach ethical canons, the only solution is the introduction of the peerreview, because the mass media products are to be scrutinized by the peers to avoid careless or abusive practices. In the open discussion the guests of the Round Table will share the proposed Code of Ethics that is to be introduced by the journalists in the Creative Society and find the ways to bringing back dignity to their profession. We want to be proud of our mass media!
