A new generation of futuristic blended-wing aircraft could soon change the way we fly. Startups like Outbound Aerospace, JetZero, and Nautilus are racing to develop ultra-efficient “flying wing” passenger planes that promise up to 50% lower fuel use, reduced noise, and larger cabins.

In March 2025, Outbound Aerospace successfully flew “Steve,” a small prototype of what could become the Olympic — a 200-seat, V-shaped airliner expected in the 2030s. The design merges wings and fuselage into one sleek body, inspired by decades of NASA and military research.

With major backing from the U.S. Air Force, JetZero plans to begin test flights of its full-scale Z4 model by 2027, while Outbound continues refining its smaller cargo version for early revenue. Experts say these designs could halve aviation emissions and challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus.

But with billion-dollar certification hurdles and unproven passenger cabin designs, can these startups turn the “holy grail of aviation” into reality?
