Definition
An Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) is a medical test that measures the levels of oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and pH in the blood. It provides information about the body's acid-base balance and respiratory function.

Indications
ABGs are typically ordered in the following situations:

1. *Respiratory distress*: To assess oxygenation and ventilation in patients with respiratory problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or pneumonia.
2. *Cardiac arrest*: To monitor the effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and guide treatment.

Interpretation of ABG Results

1. *Normal values*: pH 7.35-7.45, PaO2 75-100 mmHg, PaCO2 35-45 mmHg, HCO3- 22-28 mmol/L, SaO2 95-100%.
2. *Acid-base disorders*: Respiratory acidosis (elevated PaCO2), respiratory alkalosis (decreased PaCO2), metabolic acidosis (decreased HCO3-), metabolic alkalosis (elevated HCO3-).
3. *Oxygenation*: Hypoxemia (low PaO2), hypoxia (low SaO2).

1. *Arterial puncture*: A healthcare professional punctures an artery, typically the radial artery, with a needle.
2. *Blood collection*: A small sample of blood is collected into a syringe.
