Black Oxide is a chemical process that converts the surface of a steel part to a black oxide and allows it to be impregnated by a thin layer of oil which prevents it from rusting. Since the oil is in the surface it no longer feels oily to the touch. The oil in the black oxide layer prevents it from rusting. In this video I will show you how to do professional quality black oxide finishing in the home workshop. Black oxide is normally only available as a commercial process but there are now kits available for use in the home workshop. Black oxide is very common on nuts and bolts this is because the process does not change the size of the parts which is very important with threaded fasteners. The impregnated oil also helps to prevent surface galling. In my opinion black oxide is ideal for tools and machine parts that are not directly exposed to the elements. The black oxide does not provide indefinite corrosion resistance but for things like tools and machine parts that spend there life in a dry workshop then it is an excellent option.
