How To: Migrate EC2 Instance in AWS (2 Min) | Between Availability Zones (AZs) Using Snapshots & AMI

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to migrate EC2 instance from one availability zone to another in AWS using volume snapshots and AMI (Amazon Machine Image).

Hi guys, this is Abhi from Gokcedb. In this video, you're going to learn how to migrate an EC2 instance from one availability Zone to another in AWS. Let's start by navigating to the EC2 service then click on launch instance and give it a name.

Select an AMI instance type and a key pair. In the network settings, I will select a subnet in the availability zone of US East A1. Leave everything else to default then hit the launch instance.

Give it a few minutes for the instant state to change to running then navigate to the storage tab. Click on the volume that's attached to this instance then select it and go to the actions drop-down. Choose to create a snapshot then hit the create button.

Next click on the snapshots Link in the elastic Block store section. Wait for the status to change to complete, select your snapshot, and head to the actions drop-down. Choose to create an image from a snapshot then give your image a name.

I'm going to leave all the other settings to default and then click on create an image. Next click on the AMIS Link in the images section then select your test image. Ensure that the status is available then click on launch instance from AMI.

Give your new instance a name. Select an instance type and key pair then edit the network settings. This time, I'm going to select a subnet in US East 1B availability Zone and then hit the launch instance. Give it a few minutes for the new instance to come up and verify that it's running in a different availability Zone than the original instance. There you have it.
