We've all heard the popular theories explaining the clockwork cycle of glaciations that generally boil down to a series of overlapping eccentricities in the Earths' solar exposure. These Milankovitch cycles still don't entirely satisfy our need to explain the bistability of the system: what causes the Earth to regularly jump from glacial to interglacial over the course of a few tens to hundreds of years? Lance Weaver from the Utah Geology website suggests the hypothesis that a true polar wander would neatly fill in the blanks, whereby some variety of mass imbalance would cause a true pole shift event that snapped the axis of the Earth between two stable barycenters. It would certainly explain why the periodic glaciers seem to be centered directly over Greenland instead of the North Pole. Let us know what you think of the presentation in the comments!

PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. When not talking to brilliant people or making movies, she spends her time painting and exploring the woods. Michael Shilo also did his PhD at Columbia studying the elastic properties of molecular water. When he's not in the film studio, he's exploring sound in music. They are both freelance professors at various universities.
