6 Ways to Improve Your Iron’s Life

1) Seat the tip fully into the iron

• This is one of the most common causes for iron failure. When the tip is not fully inserted a superheated air gap is created which may cause premature element failure.

2) Remember to unplug the iron or turn down temperature control when not in use.

• If you leave the iron running for an extended period of time while not in use it may cause an overheating condition and failure of the iron.

3) Always leave solder on the tip

• Leaving solder on the tip helps prevent the working surface from corrosion. Right before you turn the iron off it is a good idea to leave a good amount of solder on the tip.

4) Use the right iron for the job

• Too small an iron may be insufficient to heat the work piece could over tax the iron and eventually ruin the element. Too large an iron may damage the work piece with too much heat.

5) Use the right tip for the job as well as the right iron

• Too small a tip in a large iron may cause dewetting issues due to overheating. Too large a tip in a small iron may cause an element to overheat. Also using too small a tip on something that requires a bigger tip may over tax the iron and ruin the element.

6) Remove tip periodically to prevent freezing

• Removing the tip breaks any built up corrosion which may over time cause a tip to freeze inside an iron.
