«Ανάθεμα τον αίτιο» [Anáthema ton étio], translated to “I curse the culprit”. Table song from Agiasos, Lesvos. One of the oldest songs of Lesvos, it has been documented earlier than 1850. It was a favourite of Greek refugees who fled from Asia Minor in 1922, with variations in verse in pronunciation and dialect. Survivors from the purgatory of Ellis Island whisper along; refugees of today wave with their oars.

Lyrics:
I curse the culprit! Let him bear the guilt
For tearing us apart for no reason
You’re a grove and I’m a sapling, I can’t forsake you
Love me, my little one, like you did before
Heed not the words of strangers, just ask your heart
Jump in and save me from the waves, if I drown, it will be on your head
I’ll carry the grief with me all my life
I’ll be thinking of you with my trembling body
My untamed heart cries like a nightingale in the wilderness
[translation by Panos Tomaras]
