New England’s territory has, for centuries, played a key role in the development of the Greater United States. The Abenaki (sometimes referred to by the overarching term Wabanaki) are one of the major indigenous tribes to have occupied New England, with a large portion of their distinct clan having settled in what is today New Hampshire. The Abenaki are described as the possible progenitors for the lost “Grand Medicine Society”.

Indeed, the history of New Hampshire appears to be chocked full of intricately designed settlements founded around the previously occupied indigenous locations. Today we will dive deep into the history of New Hampshire while examining the oldest known photographs, dated from 1859 through 1899. I’ve divided the video into three sections of images; the first being the oldest (mostly stereoscopic) photographs, dated to a collection published in 1859.

The second part of the video will showcase later stereoscopic images of New Hampshire produced between 1861 and 1874, and the final section of the video will focus on extremely well-detailed photographs of New Hampshire captured from 1880 through 1899. In examining these images, and comparing them to the current narrative, we very quickly see just how crucial a role New Hampshire played to the development of the New World. We will also begin to unravel some rather anomalous details of the architecture and landscape. The true nature of New Hampshire will be showcased through the oldest images. Enjoy!
