Six days’ notice. During Christmas.
They were at my sister Bella’s place, laughing around her tree, opening gifts with her kids. We hadn’t even been invited.
I called. Straight to voicemail.
I texted. No reply.
Left three messages. Silence.
Later, I learned what really happened. Bella had been whispering in their ears for months — that I’d gotten “too comfortable” living in the basement, that I needed a push, that I wasn’t trying hard enough to stand on my own.
So they pushed.
Fine.
I canceled the automatic rent transfer that same afternoon. Then I sent one text:
"We’ll be gone by the 28th. December rent is canceled. Consider the short notice your parting gift."
Four days later, I signed a lease.
Two bedrooms. Small backyard. Eight hundred a month.
Not fancy. But it was ours.
On the 27th, my daughter and I carried the last box up the stairs. The basement was spotless. I left one final note on the counter:
"We’re out. Just like you asked. Please don’t contact us."
When they got home, the phone rang immediately.
“Where are you? We needed to discuss this first.”
“You left instructions. I followed them.”
“You didn’t pay December rent!”
“You gave me six days to uproot my child during Christmas. You’re lucky November cleared.”
Silence.
That was seven months ago.
Now Grace has her own room — lavender walls and fairy lights she picked herself. I work full-time. We eat dinner at our own table. No tension. No whispers upstairs. No waiting for permission to exist.
My parents send birthday cards sometimes. Generic. Signed with both names like a formality.
I slide them into a drawer.
Not out of anger.
Just closure.
