10 months ago I laid jute matting in the vegetable patch to suppress weeds. How effective was the jute matting at suppressing weeds in the veggie patch?
Well it depends, for some weeds yes they were controlled, for others no. A few annual grass seeds blew in and were slightly annoying to remove. In the short term it worked quite well, in the medium term not so much. But in the long term the matting has rotted down and it has stopped a lot of weeds germinating underneath which is really useful and is helping to stop the weed cycle which is great.
Compared with the other natural part of the garden the area covered with jute matting has a lot less weeds.
