Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2020 Volvo XC90, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class III trailer hitch receiver. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure that it's something that's gonna work for you If I had a Volvo and I was looking for a hitch for it, I feel like the first thing that would come to my mind is, you know how it's gonna look. These XC90s are really sharp. They have a nice appearance to them. And so I wouldn't want a hitch that was, you know, hanging down on the bottom and super noticeable.
And with this one, I think it blends in really well actually. The only thing you're gonna be able to see is the receiver tube opening so it almost kind of looks like a factory option. After that, I feel like, you know, I'd want something that could handle pretty much anything you want to throw at it. You know, I see people using these Volvos to do a little bit of everything, whether it be towing or using accessories or a little bit of both. And with that said, this hitch will keep you covered there as well.
So one of the big questions that I want to address is if putting the hitch on the back of your Volvo is gonna interfere with your hands free lift gate assist option if your Volvo is equipped with it. And the answer is no. Even with the hitch on, you're still able to operate it. You're simply just gonna have to kick to one side or the other of the hitch to get the lift gate to open up for you. With this being a Class III hitch, it's gonna have that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening.
That is a very common size and a ton of different accessories will work with it. At the end here, it's gonna have a reinforced collar for a little bit of extra strength, and it's going to have that standard 5/8 pin hole. Now keep in mind pin and clip does not come included, but if you need one, can grab it here at etrailer. The safety chain openings are a little different. They're gonna be facing down and they're gonna be a plate style and will give us enough room to use pretty much any size hook that we might have.
I mentioned earlier that you can pretty much use this hitch to do whatever you want and a lot of that has to do with the weight capacities, they're really high. As far as the maximum gross tongue weight rating goes, that's gonna be 900 pounds and that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pushing down on the hitch. So with that number, you can use pretty much any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you'd want to, for example. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's gonna be 6,000 pounds and that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pulling on the hitch. One thing I do always like to suggest, it's never a bad idea to grab your Volvo's owner's manual. That way you can make sure your SUV can pull that much weight safely. And if you do plan on pulling a trailer, you are gonna want the lights to work that way you're safe and legal. And if that's your intention, I'd recommend checking into some trailer wiring so you can accomplish it. Now I'm gonna give you a couple of measurements and you can use these to help figure out which hitch mounted accessories are gonna work best. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be about 15 inches. So if you do plan on doing some towing, chances are pretty good you can use a ball mount that has a straight shank. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of our rear bumper, that's gonna be about three inches and you can use that measurement to figure out that if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without contacting the bumper. So at the end of the day, honestly, what more could you ask out of a trailer hitch Not only is it gonna look good, but it's not gonna interfere with any of your Volvo's features, and you know, it's gonna get the job done. You're gonna be able to use it for pretty much anything. As far as the installation goes, really not too bad, believe it or not. You would think that the Volvo might be kind of complex and a little time consuming, but it's really not. You do have to remove the fascia, but there's only a handful of fasteners and everything's pretty straight forward. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put it on together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here underneath the bottom of our Volvo. And you are gonna need to remove the fascia, that way we can get our hitch on. Really not a big deal. First thing we're gonna do is remove four screws on the bottom edge. So we're gonna have two T25 Torx screws over here. And if we
