Amid the ongoing debate over proof of citizenship, the Narendra Modi government has said that it has made it mandatory for all Indian citizens to register under the Citizenship Act of 1955 and to issue National Identity Cards to those who register. On Tuesday, in the Lok Sabha, in response to a question by Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy on what would be considered an acceptable document for Indian citizenship, Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar told #parliament that the 2004 amendment to the Citizenship Act of 1955 empowers the #central_government to register and issue National Identity Cards to all citizens. He added, “The process of issuing this document as proof of Indian citizenship was finalized after the BJP-led NDA came to power in 2014.”
“Citizenship identity cards can be issued to those citizens whose details are recorded in the National Register of #indiancitizenship ( #nric ) or National Register of #citizenship or #nrc ” the minister said.

The minister said that only those citizens who have been included in the NRC are eligible for the National Identity Card. However, Assam is the only state where this process has been completed so far. However, the government is yet to release the final list as the draft NRC published in 2019 has been challenged in the courts.
