Cotton is an important crop of Pakistan and it has been playing very vital role in our economy. In 1991, Pakistan was the 2nd largest cotton producer after USA. During the 1st and 2nd decade of 20th century, virus, pest problems, change in sowing times of BT varieties, lack of durable varieties, lack of interest of Sugar mafia in cotton, middle-man based marketing system and climatic factors gradually lead this crop to utter destruction up till 2020. This year, most of cotton growers are not willing to cultivate this crop due to the previous damages of this crop for several consecutive years.
Nevertheless, some of the bold and advanced farmers are still going to cultivate cotton according to the recommendations of Punjab Agriculture Department. In this connection, we have highlighted main points of its production technology in the cotton zone. Most of the land is still occupied and is mainly under the cultivation of wheat crop. A small fraction of acreage is available for sowing of cotton during the month of March this year.
In this video, feasibility of cotton cultivation has been highlighted. Some factors that have badly affected the cotton crop in previous few years have also been highlighted. Cotton crop is the backbone of the Textile industry in Pakistan. Cotton production can be increased by adopting modern and advanced strategy.
High temperature and dry season results into aggravated shedding of cotton flowers and bolls. In this video, we have not only explained the philosophy of Flower and Boll Shedding in Cotton but also suggested the remedial measures. Use of additional inputs, balanced use of nutrients, pest management, spray of amino acids and micronutrients has been suggested to overcome the excessive fruit and flower shedding in cotton.
Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is an important oilseed crop of sandy loam soils in partially irrigated areas of Punjab. Most of sesame crop is commonly planted after wheat crop from April to June. This season crop is more prone to monsoon rainfall during most of the seasons. In this video, we have explained that spring planting of sesame is more successful than summer crop. This season crop has very less risk of biotic stresses and mostly escapes the insect and disease attack. Early March planted sesame TH-6, a single stemmed, early maturing variety may mature at the end of June just before the onset of monsoon rains. However, end March planted crop is likely to mature during the month of July. In addition to its feasibility as spring crop, it has further been explained that Thal area and Cholistan belt are more suitable when planted after wheat. Production technology of crops is evolving with the passage of time and with the induction of new agriculture machinery, equipment and techniques throughout the globe.
Mung bean crop flourishes better in well drained, aerated, healthy loam, sandy loam and light soil. Naturally having such features, Piplan, Bhaker Layya, Fateh Pur, Doaba, Kundian and adjacent areas in the eastern side of Indus river has developed as core area of mung bean crop. Successive cultivation of Mung bean has depleted phosphorus in the root zone of this particular region. It is strongly recommended that 75-100 kg of DAP should be applied at sowing for successful cultivation of mung bean in this region.
Spring sowing is feasible in most parts but sowing after wheat is not feasible throughout Punjab. In this video, we have highlighted the suitable areas, soil and environmental conditions for successful production of green gram in different parts of Punjab province. It has been advised that suitability of soil and environment should be this crop faces severe problems in the heavy/clayey and salt affected soils especially in the rice zone if planted after wheat crop. Root rot renders severe loss in the heavy/salt affected soils if planted through broadcast method. Planting of mung bean between the interval of wheat and rice is very hardly successful. As regards central Punjab, it is only feasible in the loam and light soils patched in this region. However, it is successful as green manure crop after wheat all over Punjab.
It is expressed with great sorrow that, there were short durational, smart varieties two decades ago but now the researchers have failed to cater such varieties. Cultivation of mung bean crop in the secondary areas often fails due to poor varieties and unfavorable environmental conditions.
