A city boy from Naenae in the Hutt Valley, Garry Chittick commenced his farming career as a sheep farmer in the Wairarapa where he took up horse breeding on a hobby scale.

His decision to stand stallions resulted in a move to the Manawatu where he established Thornton Park Stud. Chittick purchased the champion Australian racemare Wenona Girl and bred multiple Australian Group I winner Kinjite to his resident stallion Centaine.

Centaine became a sire success and in 1994 the Chittick family moved north to Matamata with the purchase of Waikato Stud. Included in the purchase was the Golden Slipper winner Courtza in foal to Last Tycoon and the resulting foal was named O’Reilly.

O’Reilly was retained and won two Group I races as a 3 year old before retiring to stud. He has been an outstanding champion stallion and has been NZ Champion stallion on four occasions. In 2013 O’Reilly won all three NZ stallion awards and his successes have been followed by other resident stallions Pins and Savabeel.

Waikato Stud has been NZ Breeder of the Year on five occasions and Garry Chittick has also received accolade for Outstanding Contribution to Racing. Chittick has also served as a director of the NZ Racing Industry Board from 1994 to 2000, the last four years as Chairman.

Waikato Stud has bred some champion racehorses including Starcraft – winner of five Group I races in 4 countries including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes – G1 at Ascot.

Today the reins of Waikato Stud have been taken over by son Mark and the business has grown from 438 acres when purchased to today’s 1,650 acres and to a broodmare band of over 220 mares.

Waikato Stud is today an industry leader and has been built on Chittick’s saying “Make a decision and make it work”.
