This video presents and introduction to Beach Sanitary Surveys. The audio used for this video was recorded during a presentation provided by John Wathen, EPA Office of Water, at a Water Contact Sanitary Survey Workshop held in Clear Lake, California (Sept. 26, 2017).

The workshop was one of three held throughout the state and were a collaboration between USEPA, SWRCB's Clean Water Team and local hosts.

Safe to Swim water quality programs are an important part of ensuring public health while people recreate at the State’s many beaches and swimming holes or using these same waters for cultural or subsistence uses. As California’s population continues to grow, more people are recreating in surface waters, especially freshwater. Water quality monitoring and management continue to be challenging for many agencies and the webinar series should be of assistance to many groups as they face these challenges.
The Marine Sanitary Survey App was developed by the U.S. EPA and is based on the marine beach sanitary survey form. This app provides a technically sound and consistent approach to identify pollution sources and share information (e.g., water quality data, pollutant source data, and land use data). The overall approach of the collaborations presenting these workshops is to improve water quality for swimming and “support the use of sound, up-to-date science in the beach monitoring programs through greater use of beach sanitary surveys, predictive modeling, and rapid methods.”
