Though this thermostat is programmable it can also be used as a regular thermostat and can stay at one temperature if it's on hold. The program part of it is to save money by going back to a lower temperature, for instance, while you sleep or if you're at work. If you want a backlight you have to get RTH 2300. It also can control cooling and heating though I only use mine for heat. It can also control more complicated systems like a heat pump or steam system. I have a two-wire system for heat only.
