Flickering lights have become one of the biggest challenges for modern photographers, especially with the rise of LED lighting and PWM control systems. In this video, I dive into how Canon’s R5 Mark II tackles these issues with its anti-flicker shooting capabilities, updated in firmware version 1.1.1. From traditional AC-based flicker to the more complex patterns caused by LEDs, I explain the underlying problems and why they’re so difficult to manage.

I start by looking at the simplest option—using exposure times that align with flicker cycles. While effective, this solution limits you to slower shutter speeds, which isn’t always practical. That’s where Canon’s anti-flicker shooting mode comes in. By detecting 100 and 120 Hz flicker and syncing exposures to the start of each cycle, the R5 Mark II makes it possible to use faster shutter speeds without inconsistent brightness or color banding.

With the July firmware update, Canon also added auto flicker detection. This feature passively scans the scene and alerts you to flicker with an FLK icon on the live view display. It’s fast, sensitive, and works even in mixed-lighting conditions, making it a valuable tool to keep enabled at all times. I share my testing results, including its accuracy in very low-light situations.

For more complex scenarios, the R5 Mark II offers High Frequency (HF) Anti-Flicker Shooting, which can measure flicker up to 8193 Hz and adjust shutter speeds in ultra-fine increments to match. This is especially useful for LED and PWM-based systems that don’t sync with AC frequencies. While powerful, HF Anti-Flicker does come with trade-offs, like reduced flash sync speeds and extra setup steps. I walk through how to use both the automatic and manual HF options, including practical button assignments for quick access.

Ultimately, the R5 Mark II gives us a solid set of tools for dealing with flickering lights in both photography and video. While not every scenario can be fixed—sometimes turning off problem lights is the only option—these features go a long way in making modern lighting more manageable.
