Well known as "the Father of the Constitution," James Madison is less known for his role in shaping the American political landscape. In helping to found a major political party, organizing partisan newspapers, canvassing public opinion, and galvanizing activists, Madison contributed greatly not just to the establishment of the republic but also to its early political operation.

Richard Brookhiser went to work for National Review full time in 1977, and has been there ever since. He has written for many other magazines, including The New York Observer and The Atlantic Monthly. In 1996, he published his first biography, Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington. Most recently, he is the author of Right Time, Right Place: Coming of Age with William F. Buckley, Jr. and the Conservative Movement. He is currently writing a biography of James Madison.

The First Principles on First Fridays monthly lecture series was launched in 2008 by the Hillsdale College Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C.
