Hey guys, A property agent, Mr. Shaik Amar, was issued a correction order under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act or Pofma for making false statements in a video about Singapore's Housing Board’s Ethnic Integration Policy or EIP.

The video, posted on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, claimed that the EIP offers no benefit to ethnic minority households and has remained unchanged since the 1960s, causing financial detriment to these households when selling their flats.

The Ministry of National Development refuted these claims, stating that the EIP benefits minority communities by ensuring a defined proportion of flats are available to them in all HDB neighborhoods, including highly sought-after areas. The policy helps maintain diversity in housing estates and prevents the segregation of minority communities, which could result in fewer home ownership opportunities and potential value increases for these groups.

MND highlighted that Mr. Shaik himself benefited from the EIP when selecting a flat during a Sale of Balance Flats exercise, as the policy allowed more opportunities for minority applicants.

During the SBF exercise where Shaik had booked his SkyOasis @ Dawson flat, all minority first-timer applicants were invited to select a three-room flat in Queenstown, said MND.

In comparison, only about 40 per cent of Chinese first-timer applicants were invited to select a flat because of the Chinese EIP limit. MND noted that the value of flats at SkyOasis @ Dawson has since “appreciated significantly”. A good example is the recent all time high record price of $1.73m flat.

The ministry emphasized that the EIP ensures minority communities can benefit from property value appreciation and that the effects of segregation, seen globally, are particularly detrimental to minority communities.

As agents, we have to be careful about what we post and not to share misleading information. This is a good reminder indeed.
