Untethered Blackwater Diving in Kona, Hawaii - 2022

I was able to hop on a friend's personal boat for my 1st untethered blackwater dive! Initially I was nervous about being untethered - what if I drift too far away from the boat? What if I get too focused filming creatures that I stop paying attention to where I am and how deep I am? All valid questions. I jumped in anyways and instantly realized how freeing it is swim around in the inky darkness of the vast ocean witnessing the greatest migration on Earth as small marine organisms rise up from the dark, chilly depths of the open ocean to its surface waters.

We saw lots of strange, unique and alien-like animals with some cool behaviors too. Identification was made possible by using "A Field Guide to Blackwater Diving in Hawaii" by Jeff Milisen.
