Hiking across the rugged, boulder-strewn landscape which surrounds the Wolfberg in South Africa's Cederberg Mountains, only a scattering of bushes and flowers reminds you that you're not in fact on Mars! Near the end of last year, myself, Simon and Jonathan travelled to the Cederberg and spent and unforgettable two days hiking through the Wolfberg Cracks and Arch.

The hike begins with a short climb to the base of an impressive red-orange cliff-face. After a further ascent, working our way through a rocky entranceway, we found ourselves within the cracks themselves, an otherworldly labyrinth of narrow fissures and towering arches, with some of the country's most unique geology. The path took us deeper and deeper into the mountain, and after a fairly technical section of scrambling and boulder-hopping, we emerged onto the plateau beyond the cracks. From there, the Wolfberg itself could be seen in the distance, as well as intermittent views of the iconic Wolfberg Arch. Our route took us through fields of rock and stone, each uniquely shaped by years of erosion.

After a little while longer, we arrived beneath the arch itself, which stands like a sentinel above the lunar landscape, testifying to the power of wind and time. Rain in the Cederberg's summer months is a rare occurrence, and so, having not bothered to bring a tent, we could sleep beneath the stars and the full moon, which was bright enough to cast well-defined shadows, and allowed colours to be seen in the middle of the night.

The next day, we made our way back the way we'd come to the cracks. After climbing to see the view from the top of the cracks, we worked our way through the tamer but no less impressive Wide Crack, and then back down to our car.
