"It's the only sculpture that Moore created of a man and woman seated together. He created family groups. This is the only cast in private hands. "It shows the strength of the togetherness of the two people, but also their independent strength. And I think if you look at the king, you can see his pose, his posture, he's a little bit more relaxed. The queen sits here, rather more upright with poise and rather more authoritarian possibly. She sits slightly further forward than the king, there's great balance, there's a great counterpoint between the two."

"The hands for the Queen these were modelled from family members. He wanted them to be as expressive as possible and non abstract. And he, Henry Moore famously said that hands were the second most expressive part of the body after the face, which is probably absolutely true. The king steadies himself with his right hand on the bench. which is rather wonderful. It has a great animation. It's a very moving sculpture, but it's also got great power and presence."

One of the most celebrated works by British sculptor Henry Moore is going on sale with an estimate of up to £15 million.

Moore's King and Queen sculpture is the highlight of Christie's London Evening Sale of 20th-21st Century art on 5 March.

STORYLINE:

This is King and Queen, one of Henry Moore’s most important post-war sculptures.

The work explores themes of power, intimacy, and human presence. It originated in Moore’s studio in the early 1950s, during a period when he was increasingly working in bronze.

Moore was modelling in a free-style directly in wax and plaster rather than relying on preparatory drawings.

Crucially for collectors, this is the only remaining example still in private hands.

All the other casts are held in public collections worldwide, including the Moa Museum of Art, Atami; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C, the Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, and the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena.

Two subsequent casts were produced specifically for the Tate Collection (1957) and The Henry Moore Foundation (1985).



He noticed a head appear in the wax and as he continued shaping it, horn- or crown-like elements appeared.
