Architect’s Dream | Engineer’s Nightmare

Rising 610 metres tall, the Canton Tower in Guangzhou is the 2nd tallest television tower in the world, requiring great leaps in technology in order to be built.

The architects were determined to create a building unlike any other. Conventional TV towers are shaped like tall needles with circular observation decks, Mark Hemel and Barbara Kuit’s vision was radically different. Turning this radical design into reality would be a challenge for the engineers – the thin waist is an architect’s dream, and an engineer’s nightmare.
