The NBA amnesty clause could be coming back as a way to help teams with salary cap issues. This would give NBA teams the ability to cut one player and take his money off their books while still paying the full salary. The NBA did this exact thing in 2011 but WHAT IF they do it again in 2020? Could we see a John Wall cut, Blake Griffin cut, Andrew Wiggins cut, Chris Paul cut, Al Horford cut or Russell Westbrook cut? Those stars would end up with another team so it would be similar to a John Wall trade, Blake Griffin trade, Andrew Wiggins trade, Chris Paul trade, Al Horford trade and a Russell Westbrook trade. Where would they go and is it a good idea?

In 2011 the NBA Amnesty clause ended up in cuts for Metta World Peace, Gilbert Arenas, Chauncey Billups and Carlos Boozer among others. It helped teams almost a decade ago just after the league and the NBPA renegotiated the CBA. That agreement will have to be torn up again or at least amended because of the pandemic. Teams will need help because the cap will go down after lost revenue. Amnesty is just one suggestion to provide teams with relief. It may not happen but it’s a fun NBA “what if” to think about.
