As millions of families travel home for the Spring Festival, China’s railways are running at full speed, and so are the workers who keep them safe.

On the Yinchuan–Lanzhou High-Speed Railway, trains run all day, leaving just a four-hour overnight “golden window” for maintenance. Li Peng, who leads a young team averaging 29 years old, says their goal is simple.

Further south, at the Mohan inspection yard on the China–Laos Railway is equally busy. Freight trains loaded with tropical fruit from Thailand and Laos head north for holiday markets. Each team has just 35 minutes to inspect nearly 40 carriages per train. Even in winter, temperatures can top 30°C.

Elsewhere, rail-grinding machines send “fireworks” flying through the night to smooth tracks, while at Suzhou West Station, China–Europe freight trains continue to depart. During the nine-day holiday, eight workers remain on 24-hour duty to ensure logistics never stop, with a record 14 freight trains expected to depart.
