Diabetes is a common condition, but you cannot conclude having it on your own. Diagnosing diabetes requires laboratory tests.

In this video, We will discuss what tests could be conducted to diagnose diabetes. Further, we will discuss how to know if you have Type-1, Type-2 Diabetes, or any other, as there are different types of diabetes.

NORMAL BLOOD TEST:
If you have diabetes symptoms, your GP will ask you to have a blood test to check blood sugar levels at different times of the day.

1st blood sample (Fasting blood sugar level test):
The blood sample for this test is taken after a minimum of 8 hours of fasting. Hence in most cases, the sample is taken in the morning.
Fasting sugar level between 60-100 is normal; more than 100 is considered diabetic.

2nd Blood sample (Postprandial - After meal)
This sample is taken after 2 hours of the meal and should be below 140. More than this is considered a high sugar level.

3rd Blood sample (Random blood sample)
This sample is taken randomly and should be less than 200. Higher is considered diabetes.

HbA1C TEST
This test depicts diabetes more accurately. Below 5.8 is normal, between 5.8-6.1 is pre-diabetic, and more than 6.1 is diabetes.

How to know that it is type 1 or type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is a hereditary condition where the body's cells develop insulin resistance, while type 2 diabetes is caused due to unhealthy lifestyle, which leads the body (pancreas) to produce less insulin.

INSULIN TEST
This test checks for insulin in the body. If insulin is high (insulin is producing, but cells are resistant), it is Type 1 diabetes, but if the insulin is low (pancreas is not producing enough insulin), it is type 2 diabetes.

C-PEPTIDE TEST
Higher values depict type 2 diabetes, while a lower value means type 1 diabetes.

Note: If you are taking treatment, take an HbA1c test after every three months to know if your condition has improved or not
