San Liu / Arranged by Gu Guanren

San Liu, also known as "San Luo" or "Meihua San Nong," was originally one of the Eight Great Pieces of Jiangnan silk and bamboo music. San Liu retains the basic melody structure of the traditional piece, with some adjustments made to certain parts, and incorporates some melodic elements from the opera piece "Tan Ci San Liu." The piece mainly relies on changes in dynamics, pitch range, tone color, and rhythm to enhance the contrast between the main melody and the various interludes, while also constantly changing the main melody itself. With the personalized tone color and performance characteristics of the plucked-string ensemble, the piece presents a new and unique interpretation that has made it a popular repertoire for Chinese folk ensembles for more than half a century.
