Brian Voelker and Dave Pietramala D'ing Up the Gait Twins in '89

It's the best against the best. Johns Hopkins matched up about as well as you could against the heralded Gait brothers from Syracuse back in 1989. Starts with a well-timed hook check by Voelker on Paul Gait, who barely gives it up to his brother. Gary recovers the pass, throws a pass fake and then absorbs a can-opener check by Pietro just before the defensive switch. Gary gets turned back by Voelks with a subtle hook back check on the turn - takes a peek at his stick to make sure he still has the ball - only to be picked back up by #43. Note the hidden ball trick effort of Paul Gait cradling toward the goal - has goalie Quint Kessenich a little uneasy for a few seconds as he quickly tried to figure out which twin had the ball. Gary then gives Pietro another go as the crowd rises to its feet, only to have the ball dislodged by a perfectly timed back check behind his ear. The two Hopkins defensemen won this battle hands down. It's likely the ONLY time in their careers that the Gaits were made to look ordinary. Byrd Stadium was definitely rocking that day!
