Recently, in the late Miocene hominid locality in Haritalyangar, Himachal Pradesh, fossil remains of lizards and snakes dating back to 9.1 million years were discovered. This locality provides indications of a semi-arid climate, ranging from a seasonally wet sub-humid to semi-arid climate, with an average annual temperature of approximately 15 to 18.6 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions still exist in this region.

Lizards and snakes, being cold-blooded reptiles known as squamates, depend heavily on factors such as distribution, abundance, diversity, temperature, and climatic conditions in their habitat. Therefore, squamates, or squamate reptiles, are often recognized as excellent indicators of past climates, particularly environmental temperature.
