To say Kelso was favored going for his fourth straight Jockey Club Gold Cup may be an understatement. According to the New York Times’ pre-race piece, “the prognosticators insist that Kelso will be the safest ‘sure thing’ this side of the sunrise.” That was despite the fact that no other horse had done it before – in fact, he was the only one to win three editions of the race. The Gold Cup win was the eighth straight victory for the six-year-old, who would claim his third Champion Older Male title and fourth of five Horse of the Year crowns.
