What does a software engineer do? Software engineers develop systems and software for businesses. These products range from business applications and games to network control systems and operating systems. ... Software engineering is a smart career choice – it's one of the most in-demand skills in the world and American software engineers earn a median salary of $112,000. But all software engineers aren't created equal and there are cities in America that pay software engineers significantly more than others.

You should first earn a degree in computer science or a related field. You should have at least a bachelor's degree to begin your career as a software engineer. Majoring in computer science will offer you the most useful background for designing software.
