Описание к видео Five Kids, One Basement, Zero Apologies — The Strokes Story

In 2001, five kids from New York recorded a debut album in a basement studio that was being foreclosed. The label didn't want it. They brought in a famous producer to fix it—the band fired him. They recorded it anyway with an unknown engineer using cheap equipment and unconventional techniques. The album was supposed to drop on September 25th, 2001—then the Twin Towers fell and everything changed."Is This It" by The Strokes went on to sell over 2 million copies, top every Album of the Year list, and single-handedly revive guitar-driven rock music when nu-metal and manufactured pop dominated the charts. A fifteen-year-old Alex Turner heard it in Sheffield and decided to start Arctic Monkeys. Critics called it the savior of rock and roll. But here's what nobody tells you: the album was recorded in just six weeks, many tracks were captured live in single takes, and the iconic vocal sound came from Julian Casablancas singing through practice amps. The controversial cover—a black-gloved hand on bare skin—was shot on Polaroid two years earlier and chosen from a photographer's portfolio at the last minute. The album was released in Australia first, not America. And one song had to be cut from the US version because of September 11th.This is the complete story of how The Strokes accidentally saved rock music with 36 minutes of deliberately lo-fi garage rock—and then spent two decades trying to figure out what to do next. From prep school kids playing to five people in 1998, to meeting producer Gordon Raphael who changed everything, to the UK explosion that preceded American success, to the curse of following up perfection.Discover how Ryan Gentles went from booking agent to manager of the biggest rock band of the 2000s. Learn why RCA hated the raw production and tried to replace Gordon Raphael. Hear the story behind Colin Lane's controversial Polaroid cover. Understand how September 11th changed the album's tracklist and release. And explore the lasting influence on Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and an entire generation of indie rock bands.Featuring first-hand accounts from producer Gordon Raphael, Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis, photographer Colin Lane, and the band members themselves—this is the definitive deep-dive into one of the 21st century's most influential albums. From Transporterraum basement studio to NME's Album of the Decade, from rejected Gil Norton sessions to Saturday Night Live performances, from "Last Nite" to "Someday"—this is the untold story of The Strokes' "Is This It."
