Fires on the Frontier
G'day guys, here is a phone interview with Kevin Reilly from the remote coastal wilderness retreat in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. Through unfortunate circumstances or a judgement of error from a controlled burn from FESA (The Department of Fire and Emergency Services) Kevin last week nearly lost his remote resort. https://www.farawaybay.com.au/


As an independent film maker, I'm about to start a film/doco about fires in the Kimberley and the timing of this fire was uncanny. I'm starting to discover that this topic is HOT!  Many long-time residents in the Kimberley, gifted with the power of observation for their environment are slowly witnessing the devastating effects fires are having to the region we all love dearly. The big question is with these huge prescribed burns in the Kimberley. Are we doing this right, and as Kev mentioned, was this particular burn carried out at the wrong time of year?


We can all agree that departments like FESA do an incredible job in protecting the lives and property for all Western Australians and I for one am very grateful for all these men and women who work on the front line of fires. But is it time to also consider at what toll these fires maybe having on our fragile eco system in the Kimberley? How, alongside with arson is slowly turning the Kimberley environment into a baron desert landscape.
