Описание к видео Brisbane Glen - Noddsdale, Largs.

Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane.

The Brisbane family home was built in 1636 by the Kelso family and was named Kelsoland. It was acquired by the Brisbane's in 1671.
Thomas Brisbane was born at Brisbane House in Noddsdale on 23 July,1773, the son of Sir Thomas Brisbane and Dame Eleanora Brisbane.

In November 1819 he married Anna Maria Hay Makdougall of Makerstoun, Roxburghshire. On his father-in-law's death in 1825, Brisbane assumed the additional surname, becoming Makdougall Brisbane.

Brisbane was a keen astronomer throughout his career. He had an observatory built at his ancestral home in 1808. From this observatory he was able to contribute to the advances in navigation which took place over the next hundred years

Upon the recommendation of the Duke of Wellington, with whom he had served, he was appointed governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. He returned to Scotland in December 1825. A convict settlement and river was named after him, which became today’s City of Brisbane and River Brisbane.

Brisbane died on 27 January 1860 in Largs. His four children predeceased him. He is buried in the Brisbane Vault, which is in the small kirkyard next to the remains of Largs Old Kirk (known as Skelmorlie Aisle).

Brisbane House remained occupied by the Brisbane family until Miss Florence St Aubyn Brisbane died there on 20th September 1932. She was a distant relative and she adopted the name Brisbane to her own St Aubyn.

Brisbane House was demolished in 1942 by No. 3 Commando Unit as an exercise when they were training in Largs. All that remains today are some wall fragments and the cellar.

The front door from Brisbane House was gifted to Australia in 1958, and it is now on display in Brisbane City Hall.

Rev. William Smith's Grave ( Prophet's Grave) Largs.

A plague (possibly typhus) hit Largs in 1644. The Reverend William Smith was one of many who took refuge from the plague by living outside the town. Unfortunately he contracted the disease and died in 1647. As he lay dying he asked for two Holly trees to be planted at either end of his grave and prophesied that, providing the trees were prevented from ever meeting, the plague would not return.

The Prophet's Grave (inscription)
Heir layeth M William Smith, minister of Larges, a faithful
minister of the gospell, removed by the pestilence 1647.
Conditus in tumulo hoc jaceo juvenisque senexque;
nempe annis juvenis, sed pietate senex, Divino eloquio,
coelestia dogmata vidi abstersi tenebras, mentibus, ore
tonans. Altoniloque haesit animo per vera malorum
colluvies, verbis improba facto meis. Renewed by James
Smith, his nephew, in the year 1710. Renewed 1760.

The Latin inscription translates as -
"Buried in this tomb I lie, at the same time a youth and an old man - young in years and old in piety. By the divine spirit I have seen divine truths, and have dispersed darkness from the mind, thundering with loud voice. There cleaved to my feelings a very horror of wickedness, and to my words reproach of wicked deeds".

The Chinese Lake - Noddsdale Estate, Largs.

The Noddsdale Estate dam is known as the Chinese Lake. The original dam was christened The Chinese Lake but why or who did the christening are lost in the mists of time. All that is known is that a hundred years ago the lake was surrounded by oriental shrubs and a wooden fence which gave it the appearance of a Chinese lake situated on the hillside above Noddsdale House.
