I find the performances of the stellar cast of this not-altogether-successful comedy to be absolutely irresistible (particularly Dennis and Jackson).
An allegorical satire of Nixon and the 1970s Watergate scandal set in a Catholic convent (Glenda Jackson as Nixon, Sandy Dennis as John Dean), "Nasty Habits" is adapted from the 1974 novella "The Abbess of Crewe" by Muriel Spark (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Driver's Seat).
Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, screenplay by Robert Enders.
The film co-stars several married couples: Rip Torn (husband of Geraldine Page), Eli Wallach (husband of Anne Jackson), and Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller. With Melina Mercouri.
The remarkable cast shines, but the total effectiveness of this uneven comedy depends somewhat on one's familiarity with the Watergate scandal and its participants.
