Toyota is taking its smallest sedan to the next level with the introduction of the Yaris Ativ GR Sport Hybrid, blending sporty design with hybrid efficiency. Known as the Toyota Vios in some markets, this compact four-door has always been a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers. Now, with a performance-inspired makeover and advanced hybrid technology, it promises to stand out in the sub-compact sedan segment, especially in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
The highlight of this refresh is the GR Sport package, crafted under Toyota’s Gazoo Racing sub-brand. This trim focuses on sharper styling and enhanced driving dynamics rather than outright power. On the outside, the GR Sport receives a redesigned front bumper with larger air intakes, deeper side skirts, a sporty rear diffuser, and a discreet black spoiler. Complementing the aggressive design are 17-inch alloy wheels, along with blacked-out accents on the roof and mirror caps. To make the car unmistakably sporty, GR badges are placed at the front and rear. Buyers can pick from three sleek color options: Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic, and Attitude Black Mica.
Inside, the Yaris Ativ GR Sport continues the performance-inspired theme. The cabin features black synthetic leather upholstery with contrasting gray stitching and GR logos embedded into the steering wheel and headrests. Despite its compact size, Toyota has packed the sedan with premium features. A 10.1-inch infotainment display, wireless charging, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a Pioneer six-speaker audio system all come as part of the package. Safety has also been prioritized, with the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense, offering modern driver assistance features.
While the GR Sport package looks athletic, the biggest mechanical change comes from the addition of Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. Borrowed from the Yaris and Yaris Cross, the setup combines a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 90 horsepower with an electric motor delivering 79 horsepower. Together, they generate a combined 110 horsepower, sent to the front wheels through an e-CVT gearbox. Power comes from a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing smooth performance and impressive efficiency.
Interestingly, the hybrid option is not exclusive to the GR Sport. Toyota is also offering it in a Premium trim, which swaps the sporty bodykit for a more understated design, riding on 16-inch wheels with a toned-down interior. For those who want simplicity and lower costs, a traditional 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine producing 93 horsepower is still available, offered in four trims: Premium Luxury, Premium, Smart, and Sport. However, the GR Sport treatment remains exclusive to the hybrid lineup.
Pricing in Thailand positions the Yaris Ativ HEV as Toyota’s most affordable hybrid. The Premium Hybrid starts at 719,000 baht (around $22,200), while the GR Sport Hybrid begins at 769,000 baht . By comparison, the entry-level petrol model starts at just 549,000 baht . For enthusiasts seeking extra flair, Toyota also offers optional add-ons, including the Charismo Drift bodykit for 19,990 baht and a full GR accessory package for 28,990 baht.
Toyota is strategically launching the Yaris Ativ Hybrid at a time when Japanese automakers are facing stiff competition from Chinese brands in Thailand. While their market share has slipped from 90 percent to 71 percent, Toyota remains the leader with 38 percent. The company hopes the Yaris Ativ Hybrid will appeal to budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable electrified options. Built in Thailand, the new model is not only intended for local sales but will also be exported to 23 markets, primarily across Southeast Asia.
With its sporty GR styling, fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain, and attractive pricing, the 2025 Toyota Yaris Ativ GR Sport Hybrid is set to redefine what buyers can expect from a compact sedan in emerging markets.
