Schubert’s “perfect” Quintet is often referred to as one of the best long-form pieces of chamber music ever written. It was composed in the final weeks of Franz Schubert’s far too short life. The writing is symphonic, capturing far more harmonic colours than had ever been thought possible for an ensemble of this size. The use of two cellos was revolutionary and gave him further scope for exploration of tone and texture.

With just five musicians, each instrument soars.
