The Centre has notified the Supreme Court that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir would be restored, but Ladakh will remain a union territory. The Centre has also claimed that Jammu and Kashmir's existing position as a union territory is transitory and required for national security. The Supreme Court has urged the Centre to specify whether there is a timetable and a strategy for restoring statehood.
