"Austria is definitively the motherland of the Alpine ski. No doubt of that. That is the reason why most of the world's ski resorts are here. All we can say now is that the demand is lightly less than what it used to be in the past years. But we cannot say right now what might happened thorough the season. Maybe tourists will cut on some spending. But we can't say anything right now."

"We are noticing a decrease in the level of willingness to develop new ski resorts and property in the area. Money investments in this sector during a crisis such as this one as well as the interest rates of these days are not so well performing. So property developers stop building new houses. But as for the houses already built, especially those with a value of one, two million Euro (1.3 - 2.7 million US Dollar) or more, they can be easily sold even within the context of this crisis."

LEAD IN:
Austria will likely enter a recession next year as the global economic downturn intensifies, the country's central bank said recently (December 9).
However at the start of the ski season hoteliers and tourism officials are expressing optimism for a good season despite the current economic troubles.
STORYLINE:
The village of Zell am See is a mid size ski resort around 75 kilometres (50 miles) from the city of Salzburg.
High in the Austrian Alpine range, its altitude of 763 metres about sea level and the nearby glacier of Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun promises skiers snow throughout most of the winter.
Its 130 kilometres of skiable runs distributed across 53 slopes can be accessed by five cable cars, 10 chairlifts and 11 draglifts.
With 14, 000 beds and two million overnight stays every year the Zell am See - Kaprun area is one of Austria's best-loved ski resorts as well as one of the country's largest tourist centres.
