“And what both of us agree on is that business as usual won’t solve this problem. We have to think creatively. We have to pursue new ideas, new solutions in deterrence, removals to safe third countries like the UK’s pioneering Rwanda scheme. And as Karl said it’s increasingly clear that many other countries now agree that that is the approach that is required – Bold, novel, looking at safe country partnerships. Karl was right on that a while ago and I’m delighted that now 15 European countries together have joined in supporting that position.”

“Within the European Union there is still a long way to go. In the meantime, we have 15 states which are allied with Austria to change the European legal system. Denmark is an essential partner within the EU, and now with the partnership with the UK we can achieve an actual change in the discussion process. STORYLINE:
Austria and the UK have agreed to work together to change the legal system within Europe to allow the deportation of migrants to safe third countries.

Austrian chancellor Karl Nehammer lauded the UK’s Rwanda scheme at a joint news conference with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday in Vienna.

“With the partnership with the UK we can now achieve an actual change in the discussion process. That’s why Austria will fully support the British way wherever possible," Nehammer said.

Sunak called for “new solutions in deterrence, removals to safe third countries like the UK’s pioneering Rwanda scheme.”

In late April, the British Parliament passed legislation to send some migrants to Rwanda, clearing the way for flights this summer under Sunak’s controversial plan aimed at deterring risky English Channel crossings by people desperate to reach the U.K.

Austria is one of 15 countries in the 27-nation EU that called last week for more agreements with countries where migrants depart from or travel through to get to Europe.

That call came after EU nations endorsed sweeping reforms to the bloc’s failed asylum system.
