This is a fantastic but challenging trail to do if you're visiting Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), taking you up to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain in Wales, via the Crib Goch path and back via the Miners' Track.
This is not a route for beginners, as it involves a grade 1 scramble up to the first summit, Crib Goch. It should only be attempted by experienced hikers with proper gear and a good head for heights. It involves a steep ridge walk and is not recommended in bad weather.
From Crib Goch, continue along the ridge past Bwlch Goch to Garnedd Ugain and up Yr Wyddfa via Bwlch Glâs.
You're rewarded with breathtaking views that make the tough climb worthwhile. There is a visitor centre at the Yr Wyddfa summit, Hafod Eryri, with cafe, and toilet facilities, which is run by the Snowdon Mountain Railway and only open when trains are running, which is usually from early May to late October and dependent on the weather.
Once you've had a moment to catch your breath and are ready to head back down the mountain, retrace your steps to Bwich Glâs. Instead of continuing to Garnedd Ugain, take the Pyg track to your right and follow it down the slope, continuing on the Miners' Track, which passes Glaslyn, Llyn Llydaw, and the smaller Llyn Teyrn on the way back to Pen-y-Pass.
The car park at Pen-y-Pass has limited spaces and gets extremely busy. In busier seasons, you will have to pre-book a space well beforehand, as you won't be able pay on site (this may differ in winter). If the car park near the trailhead is full, there is more parking available just off the A498 near Llyn Pen-y-Gwyrd and a footpath running parallel to the A4086 that will take you to the start point at Pen-y-Pass. Alternatively, there is also a bus stop right at the start point, with connections to Llanberis and Bangor.
