Erbium laser technology using the 2940 nm wavelength has amazing properties in augmenting the efficacy of root canal cleaning and irrigation. The chromophore for 2940 is water, and the chemistry that is typically used to chemically disinfect and sanitize the root canal system contains water (sodium hypochlorite and ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid). Additionally, Dr. Nick routinely uses 50 gamma ozonated water as well to irrigate. The ozone additionally works to scrub the main and lateral canals clean, especially in the company of the erbium laser energy and the PIPS (photon induced photoacoustic streaming) effect (and/or with the newer iteration termed SWEEPS: shockwave enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming). Dr. Nick avoids doing root canals like the plague, but when it is necessary, he always implements erbium laser technology + ozone for improved outcomes and efficacy!
