The Culture of Bangladesh (Bengali: বাংলাদেশের সংস্কৃতি – Bangladesher Sôngskr̥iti) refers to the way of life of the people of Bangladesh. It has evolved over the centuries and encompasses the cultural diversity of several social groups of Bangladesh. The Bengal Renaissance of the 19th and early 20th centuries, noted Bengali writers, saints, authors, scientists, researchers, thinkers, music composers, painters, and film-makers have played a significant role in the development of Bengali culture. The Bengal Renaissance contained the seeds of a nascent political Indian nationalism and was the precursor in many ways to modern Indian artistic and cultural expression. The culture of Bangladesh is composite and over the centuries has assimilated influences of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. It is manifested in various forms, including music, dance, and drama; art and craft; folklore and folktale; languages and literature; philosophy and religion; festivals and celebrations; as well as in a distinct cuisine and culinary tradition.

The music of the Bauls, Baul Sangeet, is a particular type of folk song. Its lyrics carry influences of the Hindu bhakti movements and the suphi, a form of Sufi song exemplified by the songs of Kabir. Their music represents a long heritage of preaching mysticism through songs in Bengal, as in the Shahebdhoni or Bolahadi sects.

Bauls pour out their feelings in their songs but never bother to write them down. Theirs is essentially an oral tradition. It is said that Lalon Fokir (1774 -1890), the greatest of all Bauls, continued to compose and sing songs for decades without ever stopping to correct them or put them on paper. It was only after his death that people thought of collecting and compiling his repertoire.


বাউল গান মূলতঃ বাউল সম্প্রদায়ের গান। যা বাংলা লোকসাহিত্যের একটি বিশেষ অংশ। বাউলরা তাদের দর্শন ও মতামত বাউল গানের মধ্য দিয়ে প্রকাশ করে থাকে। বাউল মতে সতেরো শতকে জন্ম নিলেও লালন সাঁইয়ের গানের মাধ্যমে উনিশ শতক থেকে বাউল গান ব্যাপক জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন শুরু করে। তিনিই শ্রেষ্ঠ বাউল গান রচয়িতা। ধারণা করা হয় তিনি প্রায় দু'হাজারের মত গান বেধেছিলেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ বাউল গান দ্বারা প্রভাবিত হয়েছিলেন যা তার রচনাতে লক্ষ করা যায়। সাধারণত বাউলেরা যে সংগীত পরিবেশন করে তাকে বাউল গান বলে। বাউল গান বাউল সম্প্রদায়ের সাধনসঙ্গীত। এটি লোকসঙ্গীতের অন্তর্গত। এ গানের উদ্ভব সম্পর্কে সঠিক কোনো তথ্য জানা যায় না। অনুমান করা হয় যে, খ্রিস্টীয় পঞ্চদশ শতক কিংবা তার আগে থেকেই বাংলায় এ গানের প্রচলন ছিল। বাউল গানের প্রবক্তাদের মধ্যে লালন শাহ্, পাঞ্জু শাহ্, সিরাজ শাহ্ এবং দুদ্দু শাহ্ প্রধান। এঁদের ও অন্যান্য বাউল সাধকের রচিত গান গ্রামাঞ্চলে ‘ভাবগান’ বা ‘ভাবসঙ্গীত’ নামে পরিচিত। কেউ কেউ এসব গানকে ‘শব্দগান’ ও ‘ধুয়া’ গান নামেও অভিহিত করেন। বাউল গান সাধারণত দুপ্রকার দৈন্য ও প্রবর্ত। এ থেকে সৃষ্টি হয়েছে রাগ দৈন্য ও রাগ প্রবর্ত। এই ‘রাগ’ অবশ্য শাস্ত্রীয় সঙ্গীতের রাগ নয়, ভজন-সাধনের রাগ।

বাউল সাধকদের শিরোমণি ফকির লালন সাঁই। লালন তার বিপুল সংখ্যক গানের মাধ্যমে বাউল মতের দর্শন এবং অসাম্প্রদায়িকতার প্রচার করেছিলেন। বাউল সমাজে তিনি "সাইজিঁ" ও তার গান "সাইজিঁর কালাম" হিসেবে। এছাড়াও বাউল কবিদের মধ্যে জালাল খাঁ, রশিদ উদ্দিন, হাছন রাজা, রাধারমণ, সিরাজ সাঁই, পাঞ্জু সাঁই, পাগলা কানাই, শীতলং শাহ, দ্বিজদাস, হরিচরণ আচার্য, মহর্ষি মনোমোহন দত্ত, লাল মাসুদ, সুলা গাইন, বিজয় নারায়ণ আচার্য, দীন শরৎ (শরৎচন্দ্র নাথ), রামু মালি, রামগতি শীল, মুকুন্দ দাস, আরকুম শাহ্‌, সৈয়দ শাহ নূর, শাহ আব্দুল করিম, উকিল মুন্সি, চান খাঁ পাঠান, তৈয়ব আলী, মিরাজ আলী, দুলু খাঁ, আবেদ আলী, উমেদ আলী, আবদুল মজিদ তালুকদার, আবদুস সাত্তার, খেলু মিয়া, ইদ্রিস মিয়া, আলী হোসেন সরকার, চান মিয়া, জামসেদ উদ্দিন, গুল মাহমুদ, প্রভাত সূত্রধর, আবদুল হেকিম সরকার, ক্বারী আমীর উদ্দিন আহমেদ, ফকির দুর্বিন শাহ, শেখ মদন, দুদ্দু সাঁই, কবি জয়দেব, কবিয়াল বিজয় সরকার, ভবা পাগলা, নীলকণ্ঠ, দ্বিজ মহিন, পূর্ণদাস বাউল, খোরশেদ মিয়া, মিরাজ উদ্দিন পাঠান, আব্দুল হাকিম, আলেয়া বেগম, দলিল উদ্দিন বয়াতি, মাতাল রাজ্জাক, হালিম বয়াতি, মালেক দেওয়ান, খালেক দেওয়ান ও আক্কাস দেওয়ান প্রমুখের নাম উল্লেখযোগ্য।
