Hua Chenyu Nunchucks The Singer 2018 EP6 0216
华晨宇_歌手2018第6期单曲《双截棍》(20180216)

"Nunchucks" is composed by Jay Chou and written by Fang Wenshan. It is the ninth song in the album "Fantasia" released by Jay Chou on September 14, 2001. It mixed rock, rap, and traditional Chinese elements and created a brand new "Chinese pop style". Its lyrics are fun and playful, which are full of unexpected twists while being very descriptive. The song is about young men of the streets: they are fascinated by martial arts while having a sense of justice. The soundtrack begins with rock-style electronic music. During the entire song, Chinese musical instruments such as erhu and bronze cymbals are superimposed to portray the mixture of Eastern and the Western elements in everyday life. Before the conclusion of the song, the sudden burst of piano cuts into the scene like those fleeting moments of poetry in mundane life. It is unexpected but not incoherent. "Nunchuck" is Jay Chou's attempt at diversified musical genres, and is what had brought Jay Chou fame.

During the filming of TV program Singer in 2018, Hua Chenyu's spent 48 hours to make an adaptation of the song. After many reversals, he got an inspiration during fishing. His adaptation of Nunchucks is more focused on the philosophical aspect of Martial arts, which is “ Softness mixed with Toughness” symbolized by Nunchucks. Hua added an intro that begins with operatic singing accompanied by piano. Like thoughts gradually gathering in the night, it slowly brings quiet memories to passionate outbursts. The intro ends at the treble of the lyrics "Softness mixed with Toughness,” which defines the theme and brings the song to its first climax.

The ensuing rapping mostly uses the original arrangement. However, Chinese traditional instruments are removed. The hard rock style defines the toughness of martial arts. In some segments, to elevate the intensity, the drum beats are played between raps. The newly added rock-style phrase, “But I wish you know,” sets a tone of self-assertion in front of the whole world.

After the opening, the chorus bridge added by Hua seems to be a reverberation of the statements made. Hua especially instructed backup singers to sing without techniques to mimic an atmosphere of stadium singing. At the same time, the song gradually softens, and it finally changes into a segment of Peking Opera added by Hua, which expresses the Nunchucks “softness.” It perfectly matches with the lyrics: “Martial artists shall remember that benevolence is invincibility”. In this segment, rock elements are removed and Chinese traditional instrument zither is played with a fluidity of waterfalls in mountains, which offers the song a sublime feeling.

It is worth noting that during the second repeat of Peking Opera, the accompaniment is no longer purely Chinese traditional or rock, and the last segment of rap is accompanied by Peking Opera-style singing. The mixture of Eastern and Western style music serves the theme of “Softness mixed with Toughness.”

Before the conclusion, the melody of the original piano bridge was replaced to better connect newly added sections. It is as natural and unexpected as that of the original. The song is finally pushed to a climax by increasingly fierce rapping. The final lyrics “Full of Righteousness” points to the core spirit of a martial arts master.

Hua’s adaptation highlights a martial-art-like heroism. Various genre, such as rock and Chinese traditional music in the original arrangement, are preserved and amplified. A number of singing segments are added to express the gradual process of mixing “Softness with Toughness.” Various genres collectively express Martial-art philosophy which is unexpected yet harmonious.
